Keeping residents safe and warm over the winter has been at the heart of the Council’s Fuel Grant scheme, which this year has received over 800 applications.
The one-off Fuel Grant of £85 is for residents who may otherwise have struggled to pay their fuel bills. Those who are on benefits or have a low income are considered for the grant. Fuel Grants are part of the Local Assistance Scheme which is now in its fourth year in Richmond. Over 2,000 people have benefited so far with grants totalling £185,000. This year’s applications will bring the total help provided to residents to over a quarter of a million pounds!
The scheme is now closed for 2017.
Richmond Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Geoffrey Samuel, said:
“Despite immense pressures on Council budgets and losing 66 per cent of our Government funding we’re delighted to be helping out our most financially vulnerable residents for the fourth year in a row. It is hard for some residents to cover the costs of their heating bills which is why it is a major priority for the Council to make this fund available to them.
“The Council has to save £31m during this four year budget period because of Government cuts, but supporting the borough’s most financially vulnerable residents is and will always remain a key priority for the Council.”
