Community Awards winners announced

Release Date: 30 August 2017

Forty-seven local heroes ranging from across the borough will be receiving awards for the outstanding service they have given to their communities over the past year.

Earlier this year, Richmond Council invited members of the public to nominate residents who they feel have given outstanding service to the community, improved the quality of life for local people or benefited the community through community involvement or volunteering

The winners were chosen by a panel made up of the Deputy Leader, the Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and the Voluntary Sector, a member of the Youth Parliament Members and Council officers. The Panel received 90 nominations from around the community.

The winners include:

  • Mia Gibbons, who, since moving to the Borough 12 years ago, has worked through her local church to support the community’s homeless population and co-ordinate various church’s activities and social outreach programmes.
  • Neil Spurrier, who set up Home Start Richmond 25 years ago to help families with children under 5 years old and who are new to the area, have children with additional needs or who are experiencing social isolation.
  • Pollyanna Roberts, a young person who led the borough-wide mental health peer research which has informed the development of an online mental health support service for young people.

Cllr David Linnette, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and the Voluntary Sector said:

“The quality of nominations for Community Awards was very high, and it is always hard selecting people to honour from such a strong list of people. It’s a sign of the spirit of community and service we share in the borough that we can put forward such amazing people to be celebrated.

“I would like to congratulate all of our winners and thank them, as well as all the nominees, for their tireless service to our community. I’m looking forward to celebrating all the winners at our annual ceremony to be held later this month.”

All winners will receive their awards at a special ceremony to be held later this month.
