Partnership working between Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP) and us has seen 21 local households move into brand new flats located at the heart of Hampton Wick.
Located on Hampton Wick High Street, the newly converted Bermuda House and Brentham House provide 21 affordable homes for low cost rent and shared ownership.
The buildings were acquired for RHP by the property developers, London Square. This was as a result of us requiring a significant contribution from the developers of the Royal Star and Garter Home on Richmond Hill toward assisting those who could not afford to buy the home they need on the open market.
The buildings have been re-modelled and converted to a very high standard. Brentham House contains eight two bedroom flats and four one bedroom flats at rents substantially below market levels. Bermuda House contains five two bedroom flats and four one bedroom flats which were sold as shared ownership homes to first time buyers. All of the homes were sold to people who live or work in Richmond upon Thames.
One of the first residents to move in is Jo Tyler. She recently moved into her one bedroom Shared Ownership apartment. She said:
“I lived in the Twickenham area for about 10 years before finally moving into my own flat in Hampton Wick. I have been looking to buy for about five years, but everything was out of my financial reach. I was almost ready to give up when I saw this place promoted on social media. I have applied and three weeks later my offer has been accepted. For me, being close to family, friends and work is amazing!”
Richmond Council's Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Lisa Blakemore, said:
“As a Council we are committed to finding ways to help those local residents who find it difficult to find local housing at the price they can afford. It is innovative schemes of this kind that we must promote and search out.
“High land values, protected open space and Government policy granting permitted development rights to the conversion of offices to flats without the requirement for affordable housing, means that finding new sites is hard. Therefore, Richmond upon Thames is a challenging borough when it comes to identifying new affordable housing sites.
“It is vital that we work with and push private developers to recognise their responsibility to provide not just market but affordable homes. If London Square can meet the challenge, then so can others.”
“I am thrilled that Jo and the other residents who are settling into Hampton Wick are pleased with their new homes, and I hope that over the next 12 months – many more residents will benefit from our Affordable Housing Programme.”
RHP’s Head of Development, Robin Oliver, said:
“It’s brilliant to hear of Jo’s experience. She embodies what Shared Ownership is all about, somebody who is passionate about their area but has been priced out of the private market. We’re really pleased to have been able to work with the Council and the GLA to help Jo get on the property ladder in area she loves and which is close to her work, helping build strong communities.
We’re building, or have planning permission for, a further 78 affordable homes in Richmond upon Thames, many available through Shared Ownership and we continue to look for new sites to provide even more. This scheme demonstrates RHP’s continuing commitment to work in partnership to help address the housing crisis in London.”
