The Dignity in Care Awards recognise, inspire and celebrate care in Richmond upon Thames.
Nominations for the Community Heroes' Dignity in Care Awards are now open.
As a council, we remain strongly committed to celebrating dignity in care, and championing local care workers and personal assistants who go the extra mile to provide outstanding care and support to local residents. These awards aim to promote and recognise the very best in care and support, whatever the service provided.
The Dignity in Care Awards:
In 2017 the winners across the four categories were celebrated. The winners were chosen for providing care with dignity and always going above and beyond the call of duty.
"My mother-in-law was becoming severely ill with dementia and we urgently needed extra support as my husband suffered a heart attack and could no longer look after her. Immediately, I met this vivacious and energetic woman I felt a huge load had been lifted from our shoulders. Not only could she deal with the increasing demands made upon her by Kath, she taught us how to deal with her. Sam was enormously patience in dealing with Kath who was become increasingly difficult.
Samantha is well known and respected by clients, OTs, GPs and relatives in the Whitton area and beyond. She is extremely capable, reliable and has a lovely summer disposition. She has been working for my mother in law (who has advanced dementia) for 9 years now, and has always been there for us when we need her. She has, literally given me my life back, as I do not live very nearby, and I have a young family to take care of, and do not know what I would have done without Samantha."
“Fatima is very helpful and really organised. She is nice to everyone in the house. You can always talk to her if you have a problem with something. She is a very positive person. You can always have a chat with her. She is the best. She always makes sure everyone is ok. Fatima helps me to sort out my benefits. She asks about my likes and dislikes. She looks for activities and holidays where I want to go to. She helps me with shopping. She tells me new routes and job opportunities. She advises me on appropriate clothing. She encourages me to go out and see friends. She helps me do cultural nights.”
“Tess has provided exceptional attentive care for a close friend of mine who has been suffering from a terminal illness. Tess's commitment has made a great impression on me and she has become a true friend to my friend Bill. She makes him laugh, they sing together, she prays with him - a lifeline to Bill as he is no longer able to attend Church on a Sunday evening. The atmosphere in the flat is a happy one - I always enjoy visiting and Tess makes all those who do feel as welcome as one of her own friends. Bill found it hard to look after himself and visiting his home was not always a pleasant experience. Now, his flat always smells nice, hygiene is clearly maintained and Bill is always bathed and well-presented so that he looks and feels good. Tess has also encouraged Bill's friend to cut his hair and trim his beard, an opportunity for some male bonding and helps Bill with his personal grooming so that he is less embarrassed about not being able to care for himself.
She ensures that he celebrates major events such as birthday and Christmas and makes these times fun for him. She is a natural carer and cares for Bill 12 hours a day for six days every week, Tess also co-ordinates, supports and trains the other various carers who look after Bill overnight. Tess is an example of a person who cares not just as a job but who really cares for people and goes out of her way to make life as good as it can possibly be for the time my friend has left to him. She deserves to be recognised for her commitment and dedication to the welfare of her clients and for the genuine love she shows in her work.”
“Dudi is an absolute valued and essential member of our team. Dudi is friendly and kind caring very optimistic. Dudi is one of those people who makes working enjoyable. Dudi is organised and leads her team of carers above and beyond her job role. Dudi works exceptionally hard on day and night shifts, always with a smile on her face even in the most challenging of times. She makes the residents feel calm and relaxed with her presence and years of experience in the sector. They love her and she is thought of highly by all the relatives as well. Importantly, Dudi shares her experience and natural caring ability with new staff with an open and friendly attitude. Dudi was also nominated in 2015 and 2016, when she was runner up.”
