Black History Month – Get Involved

Black History Month is a month of events in October which celebrate the culture, history and achievement of Britain’s African and Caribbean communities.

The aims of Black History Month are to:

  • Promote knowledge of the Black History, Culture and Heritage
  • Disseminate information on positive Black contributions to British Society
  • Heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people to their cultural heritage

The culture of Richmond upon Thames has been enriched and our society has been made stronger because of the people who live in Richmond, their achievements and those of their families.

What are we doing for Black History Month?

In October 2020 we will be celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black people in Richmond upon Thames and across the UK with a full programme of activities and events. We will publish the programme in the next few weeks.

As part of our plans, we would like to create an online exhibition aimed at sharing stories from residents' past and present and reflecting on Black history in Richmond. We need your help.

We need your help!

If you are Black and live, work or are educated in Richmond upon Thames we need your help.

We would like to know your stories. That could be:

  • The history of you and your family in the borough. Can you share your memories or anecdotes from your family members?
  • More information about your life in Richmond upon Thames. Your role in the community e.g. Do you own a local business? Do you go to school or volunteer in the borough? Do you have a hobby?
  • What are your local achievements or happy memories whilst living in Richmond? Did you meet your partner here? Did you achieve your qualifications here? Have you played a key role in a local activity?
  • Share information about your family culture or heritage? This could be sharing information about traditional foods, music, art or traditions

You can send in your stories online, via email or post. You can submit written information, photographs or video.

All the stories will be used to create an online exhibition that will launch in October.

Help us shape our future services

At the same time, we are keen to know the experiences of local Black residents living in the borough to help us improve our services in the future and help us challenge any prejudices and behaviours that impact the lives of local people. So as part of the case study submission, we are keen to know more about your experiences with racism, how well supported you feel in the borough, what matters most to you and what barriers you think exist as a Black resident living or working in Richmond upon Thames.

This information will be confidential. However, we will use it to help shape a special themed Community Conversation event at the end of October. We hope that this ongoing dialogue will help local Black residents influence real change in the area in which they live.

Event details:
