Wedding marks opening of exhibition

A wedding ceremony was held at Orleans House Gallery on Saturday 1 November as part of the opening of a new exhibition. The legal ceremony formed part of the opening event for ‘Ground’, an interactive, site-specific installation created by artist in residence Emma Smith. The exhibition is the culmination of four months work in which Emma has been exploring the history of Orleans House.

Rob Lord and Leatitia Goncalves responded to adverts appealing for a couple to take part in the opening event and with family roots in Orleans, France it was fitting that Leatitia was chosen. The event reflected the 18th century heritage of the building with harp music accompanying the ceremony and chocolate éclairs served to the guests.

Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure commented:

“It has been fascinating watching Emma’s work progress since July and it is remarkable and very special that the opening event for her solo exhibition featured a wedding ceremony.

“The Council is proud that we are able to make the studio space at Orleans House Gallery available for an artist in residence and the tremendous work Emma has produced demonstrates what a valuable opportunity this is.”

Emma Smith said:

“Over the summer I held a series of events looking at the historical and contemporary use of Orleans House and its grounds, which saw over 250 people involved in the project.

“I was exploring the use of the Octagon Room as a party room in the house, which has included banquets for royalty and today is used for weddings. By having a wedding that guests can attend without any personal connection, I hoped to explore the nature of ceremony and its traditions within the space.”

‘Ground’ looks at the heritage and history of location in relation to legacy, behaviour and contemporary use and shows work made during the on site residency including sound, video, installation, drawing, text and photography.
