Tourism and travel

The Borough welcomes approximately 4.5 million tourists every year, generating a total revenue of almost 200 million pounds.  There are several large and well-known tourist venues attracting visitors from all over the world, plus a number of lesser known centres of interest.

The tourism team has a programme of promotional and support activities to encourage visitors and to develop tourism as an essential and substantial  part of the local economy.  It also recognises that there can be adverse effects to tourism, for example, for residents and for the natural environment. We aim to manage tourism in a sustainable way by encouraging:

  • provision of overnight accommodation;
  • use of public transport to reach tourist venues;
  • encouraging visits to lesser-known attractions; and
  • other initiatives that help to limit damage and use of non-renewable resources.
