Richmond pupil wins charity race
Richmond-upon-Thames’ Hugo Fleming won the boys 13-14 race at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Lord Mayor’s Mile on Saturday. The event was a precursor to the annual Lord Mayor’s Parade, one of the world’s oldest and biggest annual processions.
The race covers a mile route in the heart of the city’s financial district in front of the Lord Mayor, various other dignitaries and thousands of spectators. Fleming, who attends St Paul’s School in Barnes was making his first appearance in the annual event. He covered the distance in 4 minutes 28 seconds.
Hugo Fleming said: “It was something that I definitely aimed to do coming here. Coming down the finish I saw I had the opportunity to really put in a kick and I won – brilliant. I did the mini marathon and this was very similar. It’s just brilliant to run in London. It was a brilliant atmosphere, the crowd were really good.
“I run with Walton Athletics Cub and I mostly do middle distance like 800m and 1500m, I also do a bit of modern pentathlon which is running, shooting, swimming, fencing and horse riding. I’m aiming towards a career in sport, so this is one of the steps along the way.”
