How to find your Standard Industrial classification (SIC) code

Please use this simple guide to find the SIC code for your business:

Step 1.

Visit the following Companies House web page.

This will bring up a full SIC code list. You must use the 2007 list to find your SIC code

Step 2

Then either:

a) Look through the list to find the 5 digit code against your type of business; or
b) Use the search facility (example below):

Example 1 - my business is Management Consultancy:

  • In the search box type 'management' or 'consult'
  • Find business activity – in this case it is SIC 70229

Example 2 - my business is an Antique shop:

  • In the search box type 'antiques'
  • Find business activity – in this case it is SIC 47791

Step 3.

If you are still struggling to find your SIC code a search on a common search engine may help.

You should however check any code against the list on the page at paragraph 1 above.
