Family learning

Family Learning provides a range of opportunities for families in the widest sense (children, parents, carers, grandparents) to learn together in order to raise skills across generations.

They enable families to learn in a relaxed atmosphere, picking up ideas to reinforce learning at home.

For many adults a family learning course will be the first steps towards taking up further adult learning and training opportunities or getting a job, and they can be guided to do so as part of the Wishes programme.

Benefits of family learning

  • Promoting lifelong learning for the whole family
  • Building the confidence of family members of all ages as they join together in a learning activity
  • Helping to involve parents/carers in their children’s education and to be better able to support them
  • Improving the literacy, language and numeracy of parents or carers
  • Improving the learning experience and raising the achievement of pupils
  • Combating the feelings which lead to poor school attendance
  • Raising the achievement of adults

Family Learning programme achievements

This year 1,470 learners have been involved in Family Learning activities. A number of these people have attended more than one course. There have been 142 training courses run across the borough in locations such as children’s centres, schools and other training centres.
