Rape alarms available from police and Council

Hundreds of rape alarms are being made available free to young women in the borough following the four attacks committed in Richmond Upon Thames and Hounslow.

Police last week confirmed they were investigating four attacks, all said to be linked, on women aged 16-25 by a man described as having a dark complexion and who was said to be in his mid-to-late 20s, with chubby cheeks and thick eyebrows.

One of the victims described the suspect as having dark hair, while two of the victims could smell sweet aftershave on him. Anyone with any information is urged to call the Incident Room on 0208 785 8244 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Richmond Council and its partners in the Community Safety Partnership are giving the alarms out from the Civic Centre reception in York Street, Twickenham, and from the town’s police station. Extra police patrols have also been organised.

Parks Patrol officers, who work the borough’s park areas during the evenings have been given the description of the man and also have a number of alarms which can be given out to vulnerable women late at night.

A briefing was last week circulated to all state and private schools in Richmond upon Thames, as well as to Richmond College, to make pupils aware of what has happened.

Anne Lawtey, the Council’s Community Planning Manager said: “Richmond upon Thames is still the safest borough in London, and ‘stranger rape’ attacks are extremely rare, but the partnership has acted quickly to do everything we can to ensure young women are warned and given the right advice.
