It's stitching, but not as we know it

If you still cling to the idea that embroidery is a genteel art that has had its day, prepare to be surprised…

A new exhibition highlighting the contemporary work of six innovative textiles artists is on display at the Riverside Gallery in the Old Town Hall, Richmond, and will confirm that embroidery is an expressive medium that can be challenging, entertaining and beautiful.

Some of the artists in the 21st Century Stitchers exhibition recycle materials to create 3-D pieces bursting with colour and texture. Others create large scale portraits which at first glance might be mistaken for paintings.

The exhibition, which runs until Saturday, July 4 has been curated by the Embroiderers’ Guild, a charity which promotes the craft and supports emerging artists.

The gallery is open on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am - 6pm, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am - 5pm. On Wednesdays it is open from 10am - 8pm for evening viewings.
