Eat al fresco in Church Street

Continental living comes to Twickenham from next Thursday evening, when the gates close across Church Street and the road’s café’s, bars and restaurants launch their outdoor dining season.

Richmond Council, has given permission for the road, near the town’s stretch of the River Thames to be closed to traffic on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and for most of the day on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Businesses will be responsible for closing the gate, at the junction with York Street and King Street, which can be shut to traffic between 6pm - 11pm on Thursdays, 6pm - 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10.30am - 10pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. The al fresco dining season, when the closures will apply, runs from Thursday, May 21 to Sunday, September 6.

Procedures are in place to have the gate opened quickly in an emergency, and the far end is not gated at all.

As part of the Council’s long term support for small businesses during the recession, licensing of the alfresco dining has been approved until 2011.

The Council made the decision after hearing how, in previous years, outside dining had been beneficial to businesses there, and had been well received by the community, which had become more aware of its usefulness as a shopping and social area.

Paul Chadwick, Richmond Council’s Director of Environment said: “We’re giving businesses in Church Street an extra helping hand by allowing them to boost trade with the offer of outdoor meals during the warm summer months. This really will make a great difference to the independent café’s and restaurants operating there, so I hope the businesses there really capitalise on it.”
