Borough smashes tree planting target

Homeowners in Berwyn Road, South Richmond, have helped the borough council smash its target of planting 250 new trees this year. New figures released show 900 were planted, against a target of 250 for 2008-9.

Members of the Berwyn Road Residents Association have worked with the Council to help enhance their road by paying for trees to be planted there.

David Allister, Richmond Council’s Head of Parks and Open Spaces, said: “It’s great to see that people living in the borough want to see more trees in their roads and I applaud them for putting their words into action and raising the money needed for the planting.

“Trees are effective in filtering out pollutants from vehicle emissions and provide habitats for wildlife, and research shows people like living in leafy areas, and roads with trees on them can often command higher house prices.”

Resident comment:

As well as the help from residents, the on-going Parks Improvement Programme and the Council’s urban design team has paid for more than 350 trees to improve the environment in other roads in Richmond Upon Thames.

In North Barnes alone, more than 200 new trees have been planted in roads, including Stillingfleet Road, Barnes Avenue and Boileau Road as part of the Council’s drive to improve the environment there.

A survey of existing street tree locations found that a number of sites had seen dead or diseased trees that had been removed in the past, which had not been replaced. These sites too have been replanted with new trees.
