Road safety
Junior Safety Officers
This major scheme involves the appointment of Junior Safety Officers (JSOs) to raise awareness of safety issues in their local community. JSOs are responsible for maintaining a safety notice board, running competitions within the school and taking assemblies or classes on safety.
London-wide these officers are often referred to as Junior Road Safety Officers as they focus on road safety. In our borough, they promote all aspects of safety such as home, fire, water and road.
Many of the JSOs in the borough do much more than mentioned above; they are also responsible for maintaining their own section of the school website, writing articles for the school newsletter, carrying out walking, cycling and scooting audits and surveys for the school travel plan.
School Crossing Patrols (SCP)
SCPs are employed by the Council, primarily to help children cross the road safely on their way to and from school. Even where a SCP is provided, parents remain responsible for ensuring their children's safety.
It is not possible to meet every schools request for a SCP however individual requests highlighted in the School Travel Plan are researched to identify a suitable resolution.
