Environmental improvements

As part of a programme to maintain and improve the quality, appearance and function of the Borough’s public spaces including the River Thames, the following projects are being undertaken by the Urban Design Team in close collaboration with other sections of the Council.

Richmond Town Centre

The main streets between Richmond Bridge and Kew Road/A316 have been redesigned as a part of a comprehensive highways improvement scheme funded by Transport for London. The scheme will include Hill Street, George Street, The Quadrant, Kew Road to the A316, as well as locations such as Duke Street and Victoria Place. The works include York stone and granite paving, with new lighting, signage and street furniture, and redesigned public spaces such as to the front of Richmond Station.

Public Space Programme for Priority Areas

The Council has identified five areas of relative disadvantage of the Borough which are less affluent than the rest of the Borough where there is opportunity to fund improvements to public spaces and shopping streets with new trees, paving, lighting and seating for the benefit local residents and the wider environmental quality of these areas. These are Heathfield, Ham, Hampton Nurserylands, Castelnau and Mortlake. The Council is now committed to a £2million programme of works over three years to 2010-2011.

Legible London

Richmond and Twickenham town centres are the first outer London areas to partner Transport for London (TfL) in Legible London, a new London pedestrian signage system.

Twickenham Town Centre

With funding secured by the Council from the RFU, two public realm projects have been agreed by the Twickenham Town Centre Management Board which will improve important small areas of the town centre with new street furniture, paving and cycle stands.

These will be located in Arragon Road and London Road.
