The DVLA are responsible for dealing with untaxed vehicles on public roads. Please note, as of 1 October 2014, vehicles are no longer required to display a paper tax disc in the vehicle.

You are able to check if a vehicle has valid tax on the DVLA website using the vehicle enquiry tool.

Allowances

There are allowances for some foreign registered vehicles from UK tax and registration for certain periods of time meaning they will not need to display a UK tax. See GOV.UK for further details.

How to report an untaxed vehicle

To report a vehicle that appears to be untaxed, you will need to provide the following details. You can make your report anonymously if you wish.

  • The registration mark of the vehicle
  • Location of the vehicle (e.g. outside 10 street, town, TW1)
  • The make, model and colour of the vehicle

Wherever possible, please provide:

  • The time the vehicle can be seen on the public road
  • Name and address of the owner

Reporting an untaxed vehicle to the DVLA

We do work in partnership with the DVLA to report any untaxed vehicles that our Street Scene Enforcement Team come across during inspections of suspected abandoned vehicles, and on daily patrols. Notification of any untaxed vehicle is sent, by the team, to the DVLA for their enforcement action.

On certain occasions, we will also work in partnership with the DVLA to wheel clamp or remove untaxed vehicles. Untaxed vehicles should be reported to the DVLA in the first instance.
