Air quality in the community

We work with communities to raise awareness about local air pollution and its impact on health, and to consider practical ways to minimise contributions to air pollution in the borough. This includes supporting annual campaigns and bidding for funding for air quality projects that aim to help communities.

Campaigns to get your community involved

We support annual campaigns such as Clean Air Day and Car Free Day, and encourage community involvement in the related events that we organise. There are also ongoing campaigns such as Idling Action and airTEXT which aim to inform and support individuals and communities.

Idling action campaign

Roadside engine idling is an avoidable form of air pollution. Reducing engine idling is a top priority for Richmond Council. We encourage all residents and community groups to sign our engine idling pledge to help make our communities idle free.

We hold idling action events in the borough once a month (except during the summer school holiday) and regularly call for volunteers to help us to engage with drivers. More details can be found on our Idling Action page. We would love to hear from community groups and individuals who want to get involved at a local location. Please email the Air Quality Officer if you are interested and want to find out more.

Air pollution monitoring for communities

We carry out air quality monitoring across the borough. More information can be found on our monitoring and data page which includes links to the recent data recorded and reports. You can also view the current levels of air pollution in the borough (and across the Capital) on the Breathe London project website.

If you are interested in monitoring and improving air pollution in your community, the Breathe London project also aims to supply a free air pollution monitor to 60 communities in London over three years, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. You can find more information and submit an application on behalf of your community group on their London Community Programme webpage.

Community groups

Our Community action page is intended for the use of any community group that has an interest in air quality in the borough. We also encourage the use of this page for communicating any community-based air quality matters and achievements so please get in touch if you have ideas to add.
