Advice in case of Fire

Fire is the biggest risk in your home. Please visit the London Fire Brigade website for further information on fire safety in the home or community.

The following useful tips will help keep you and your family safe:

  • Have a smoke alarm. Preferably one per level and batteries should be checked at least once a year
  • Try to identify two routes out of each room. Walk through your escape routes with your family, keeping routes clear from obstacles
  • Be aware of where keys are kept for windows and doors
  • Don’t smoke in bed
  • Do not leave burning candles unattended
  • Shut doors at night – this helps stop fire spreading
  • Don’t leave your TV or similar items on standby

In the event of a fire:

  • Get everyone together and get out. If there is a lot of smoke, crawl along the floor where the air is clearer
  • Stay out
  • Call 999
  • If you cannot get out, stay together in one room near an open window. Push a blanket or similar along the bottom of the door
