Duke of Edinburgh's Award timescales

The time it takes to complete an award varies between each level.

How to take part

Bronze

  • Volunteering - three months
  • Physical - three months
  • Skills - three months
  • Expedition - plan, train for and undertake a two day, one night expedition

You must undertake a further three months in the Volunteering, Physical or Skills section (therefore, one section will be for six months).

Silver

  • Volunteering - six months
  • Physical - one section for six months and the other section for three months
  • Skills - one section for six months and the other section for three months
  • Expedition - plan, train for and undertake a three day, two night expedition

If you have not completed Bronze you must undertake a further six months in either the Volunteering or the longer of the Physical or Skills sections (therefore, one section will be for 12 months).

Gold

  • Volunteering - 12 months
  • Physical - one section for 12 months and the other section for six months
  • Skills - one section for 12 months and the other section for six months
  • Expedition - plan, train for and undertake a three day, two night expedition
  • Residential - undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for five days and four nights

If you have not completed Silver you must undertake a further six months in either the Volunteering or the longer of the Physical or Skills sections (therefore, one section will be for 18 months).
