Skills to Foster training

Once you’ve had the initial visit from the Fostering Team and made an application to foster, you will be invited to complete the Skills to Foster course, developed by The Fostering Network.

About the course

The Skills to Foster course is lead by fostering team social workers and experienced foster carers. Children who have been fostered, as well as the sons and daughters of carers, attend to give you their insights and experiences. They will take you through six sessions, which cover:

  • What foster carers do
  • Identity and life chances
  • Working together
  • Understanding children in foster care
  • Safer caring
  • Transitions

These training days are held once a month in either Richmond or Kingston.

If you would like to attend one of our Skills to Foster training courses please get in touch so we can arrange an initial visit with you prior to the training dates.

Once you have attended the Skill to Foster training, please complete a feedback form to tell us about your experience and learning so we can constantly improve the process for applicants. Please email completed forms to fostering.info@richmond.gov.uk.

Training takes place at either:
