Retirement housing

There are a number of retirement housing options in Richmond. These are ideal for older people who wish to live independently, in comfort and security with the opportunity to socialise and get involved with leisure activities when they choose.

Providers of retirement housing range from large mainstream housing associations, such as Richmond Housing Partnership (RHP), to small voluntary organisations. The Council no longer provides retirement housing but administers the Supporting People Programme, which helps to meet some of the costs of housing related support.

A wide selection of retirement housing units are available in the borough, some consisting of only 6 flats whilst others have as many as 42. The accommodation is self-contained with one or two bedrooms and a lounge, or a bed-sitting room, kitchen and bathroom facilities.

The majority of these retirement housing schemes have a 24 hour alarm service that enables residents to summon help in an emergency. This is monitored by the Scheme manager when on duty. At other times Careline provide an emergency response 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

There are two types of retirement housing currently offered through RHP and they are now referred to as Retirement schemes. Full sheltered housing is a retirement scheme with a resident manager and semi-sheltered housing, a retirement scheme with a mobile manager. Please visit the RHP website for further information on their retirement schemes

Further comprehensive information about sheltered housing in Richmond can be found in the Housing for Older People(pdf, 946KB) information booklet.

If you wish to be considered for retirement housing you should contact the Council’s Housing Provision Team on 020 8487 5454 and apply to be on the housing register as this is the main route into sheltered housing (retirement schemes).
