Fly-tipping
Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish. Not only is it damaging to the environment and costly for the Council to deal with, it is also a serious criminal offence which can lead to large fines or imprisonment.
Report a fly-tip
If you come across a fly-tip, do not touch or remove the waste as it could be dangerous. You should report it using the following methods:
Let us know about a fly-tip online- If you see a fly-tip in progress, please call the Police on 999, providing the registration details of any vehicle involved
- If you have any information regarding a fly-tipping incident in the Borough and would like to speak to a member of the Street Environment Enforcement Team in confidence, please telephone the Contact Centre on 08456 122 660 and ask to be put through
What we can do
- Fly-tips on publicly owned roads and paths will be cleared as soon as possible and within five working days of receiving the report
- If the fly-tip is on private land (which includes most shared alleyways, access roads, and garages), it is the responsibility of the land owner(s) or those who benefit from a private right of way to arrange clearance. The Council can investigate cases where there is evidence or a witness, but is not obliged to clear fly-tips on private land.
- We will prosecute all offenders caught
Using a clearance company
If you use a clearance company, make sure they are a Registered Waste Carrier (Environment Agency website). If they are not, and they dispose of your waste illegally, you could be held responsible, facing a fine and a criminal record.
