Richmond Council has welcomed the additional £3.9m from the Government to address the shortage of school places in the borough.
The Secretary of State for Education, last week announced an additional £500m for local authorities experiencing the greatest need in managing shortfalls in providing pupil places.
Cllr Paul Hodgins, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Schools, said:
“This additional funding is great news for our borough. Richmond upon Thames has some of the best primary schools in the country, and therefore demand is very high. Every year we strive to offer parents a place at their first preference of school - however, due to the rise in the birth rate - this can be particularly challenging.
“To meet this rising demand, we have a long term school places strategy that includes funding for six schools to have permanent expansions over the next two to three years, in addition to those expansions which are already under way.
“This funding shows that despite the tough economic climate, the Government still recognise the need to invest in school places”.
