Residents thanked for hospice generosity

The Shooting Star hospice in Hampton has received a £20,000 boost, thanks to the generosity of local people who contributed to former Mayor Cllr David Marlow’s fundraising during his year in office.

Cllr Marlow handed over the money to the hospice on Thursday and wished them well in the work they do supporting people in the area with terminal illnesses. He said: “I have seen the heart warming service which the staff and medics at Shooting Star provide, and I am very glad to have had an insight into their work during my year as Mayor.

“The £20,000 which local people have donated will go a long way towards helping with the hospice’s running costs, and I thank everyone for that. The people using the hospice face incredible emotional turmoil, as well as severe medical problems, and the way the staff have helped, talked to and comforted them and their families, many who are at their wits’ end, is remarkable.

“I have been very proud to have focused the borough’s attention on the hospice for a year. I hope people will continue to be as generous in supporting it in the future.”

During his year as Mayor, Cllr Marlow hosted a number of fundraising events, including quizzes, a golf day which raised £2,200, the annual Mayor’s Ball, which brought in £12,145 and a Christmas concert, which raised £1,000

Mike Hey, Head of Community Fundraising for the hospice, said: ”Cllr Marlow was a great source of support thoughout his year in office. For us to be involved in so many events, like the Mayor’s Ball, and the night at the Orange Tree Theatre, as well as the New Year’s Day Parade in central London was a real privilege. To have collected this amount of money was phenomenal, but to have raised awareness of the hospice has been invaluable to us. He gave us a platform in the community which we are very grateful for.”
