Residents give their views on the future of Hammersmith Bridge

The views of over 2,000 local people on the closure of Hammersmith Bridge have been passed to Hammersmith and Fulham Council and TfL to consider as part of their deliberations on the bridge’s future.

In June and July, Richmond Council conducted a survey to establish how the closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic is impacting the local community.

Over the six weeks informal consultation 2,707 local residents and businesses submitted their views on areas such as traffic congestion, air quality, parking, accessibility and public transport. They were also asked on their views on the bridge’s future.

The feedback has now been evaluated and a report has been passed onto Hammersmith and Fulham Council and TfL to be considered.

Cllr Alexander Ehmann, Chairman of the Transport and Air Quality Committee for Richmond Council, said:

"Together with Hammersmith and Fulham Council and TfL, we have committed to making sure that residents on our side our both informed and engaged on the future of the bridge.

"Whilst this was an informal consultation, it has given us a clear understanding on the experiences of local residents and businesses. We will continue working with both organisations and will feedback when we have clarity on their plans for the bridge’s future."

Please note that whilst the bridge is currently closed to all motor vehicles including cars, vans and buses, the pedestrian walkways are open to walkers and runners. Cyclists can use the tarmacked road and motorbikes may be wheeled, but not ridden, across the bridge.
