Record figures for exercise scheme

An exercise referral scheme that provides discount fitness sessions is proving a huge success, with over 120 residents taking part last year, more than ever before.

Run by Richmond Council in partnership with Richmond and Twickenham Primary Care Trust, the scheme encourages people who have a physical or mental health condition to take regular exercise.

Those wishing to take part can seek advice from their GP or other health professionals to find out if they qualify for the scheme.

Once referred, a qualified instructor will assess their fitness and provide a suitable 12 week exercise programme.

Gym based programmes, group classes and swimming sessions are all available.

Four venues support the scheme, Teddington Pools and Fitness Centre, Whitton Sports Centre, Pools on the Park and The Workhouse Gym in Richmond.

A special class for patients with chronic pulmonary disorders is being launched in July.

Cllr Denise Carr, Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing on Richmond Council, said:

“The referrals are proving very successful with those taking part feeling real benefits.

“The classes cater for a range conditions from those with poor balance and mobility to people suffering from depression or high cholesterol.

“We have recently secured funding from Sport England that will allow us to extend the choice of activities.”
