A timely campaign to combat theft and burglary over the festive season is urging people to help themselves before thieves do.
Operation Christmas Presence attacks Christmas crime on two fronts, advising residents to guard their homes against opportunist thieves, and reminding revellers to behave responsibly and keep a close eye on their belongings.
Cllr Serge Lourie, Leader of Richmond Council, said:
“Crime levels typically increase over the Christmas period, so the Council and the police want residents to take the initiative and freeze out criminals.
“Following a few simple tips, such as storing presents out of sight or keeping valuables close to hand when out celebrating, can make a real difference.
“We want people to enjoy Christmas and New Year but we also want them and their property to be safe.”
There are three simple measures to keep valuable items safe from thieves:
Borough Commander, Det Chief Supt Rick Turner, said:
“I’d like to remind everyone to take responsibility for their property and possessions whether at home, out shopping or socialising.
“Many of the thefts and burglaries we investigate could be prevented. It is hugely frustrating that residents still leave doors and windows open or valuables on show.
”We also urge people to behave responsibly when out celebrating. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated.”
