Getting to grips with waste

West London currently produces enough waste to fill Wembley Stadium every two years. Dealing with this waste requires a wide range of facilities - and the need for these facilities is growing.

Richmond upon Thames has joined five other west London boroughs - Brent, Ealing, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow - to plan for their future waste.

Much of the area’s waste goes to landfill sites outside London.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said:

“This cannot continue. We are becoming much more aware of the problems created by sending waste to landfill. In particular emissions from landfilled organic waste have a serious effect on climate change.

“There is a challenge to all of us to reduce waste and to take more responsibility for the waste we do produce. This will include managing, recycling and processing more of our waste in West London.”

The West London Waste Plan looks at dealing with the area’s waste up to 2025. It will prioritise waste reduction and recycling.

The Plan will address all waste - residential, commercial and industrial - produced in the West London area, as well as wastes produced by the construction industry.

The Plan is in the early stages of preparation but some key issues and different policy options have been identified.

Everyone will get the chance to find out more about the Plan, and give their views at this early stage through workshops which will be held in each of the six West London boroughs.

Richmond borough residents can go along to the workshop on Wednesday December 10 at the Curriculum & Training Centre, Clifden Rd, Twickenham TW1 4LT. It runs from 6pm to 8.30pm.
