Sheen Lane Centre facelift officially launched

Sheen Lane Centre

A scheme which has transformed the area around Sheen Lane Centre was officially unveiled today (23 May) by the new Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Helen Lee-Parsons, in one of her first official engagements.

The £225,000 scheme has revitalised a once-tired space and swept away clutter.

Damaged street furniture and outdated planters have been removed, a new natural looking smooth surface provided, better lighting installed and signs and noticeboards upgraded. Other improvements include new tree and shrub planting, new and refurbished benches, improved cycle stands and more litter bins.

The bulk of the funding - £175,000 - came from Transport for London (TfL), with £50,000 provided by Richmond Council.

The scheme was originally initiated by the Mortlake with East Sheen Society and developed by the Council.

The Mayor, Cllr Lee-Parsons, said:

“I am delighted to officially open this scheme, which has rejuvenated the area around this popular centre.

“Many congratulations to all those involved in this excellent project.”

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said:

“The superb scheme has created a more attractive, safer and uncluttered space in the heart of East Sheen.

“We would like to thank the many people who helped make it a success and appreciate the patience shown by residents and businesses while it was being completed.

“The scheme is a fine example of what can be achieved when the Council and the community work closely together, and we are very pleased with the end result and hope everyone else is too.”

Anthony O Keeffe, Assistant Programme Manager, Transport for London said:

"TfL is delighted to have been able to support LB Richmond's scheme at the Sheen Lane Public Centre with funding from our Area Based schemes programme.

“The completed scheme has resulted in significant improvements to this public space providing a safer, more secure environment with improved accessibility for people and which is visually pleasing."
