Carnival to showcase cultural diversity

This year’s Twickenham Carnival is set to take everyone on a fun-filled tour of the world’s cultures on Sunday 15 June.

The theme of the carnival is ‘Colours of the World’ to coincide with the ‘Cultural Olympiad,’ which will celebrate cultural activities in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics.

The day will kick off at noon, with a carnival parade comprising colourful floats, dancers and drummers travelling from York House in Twickenham, along Riverside and finishing at the carnival village in the beautiful grounds of Orleans House Gallery.

From 1pm carnival village will host a range of exciting cultural activities and performances including DJ ‘Community Showcase’, Capoeira (a combination of dance, music, acrobatics and martial arts), steel band and professional dance performances. Also on offer are arts activities, face painting, storytelling, food stalls and exhibitions.

The carnival draws to a close with a Brazilian Samba finale from the London School of Samba at 5.15pm.

It is a free event organised by Richmond Council’s Arts Service, with financial support from Arts Council England.

Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:

“Twickenham Carnival is this year celebrating its fifth anniversary and we expect a large crowd of more than 3,000 people to take part in the festivities.

“The carnival has enlisted the talents of people of all ages who have worked with artists from across the borough to make this year’s event more colourful and impressive than ever.

“I urge borough residents to come along with their families and friends to help us celebrate cultural diversity. There will be something for everyone.”
