Enthusiastic volunteers are being sought by Richmond Council to step forward and become health walk leaders.
A busy programme of walks is scheduled for spring and summer in variety of venues across the borough, including Richmond and Bushy Parks.
Those interested in volunteering are asked to commit to a minimum of one walk per month, for at least six months.
Leaders will be responsible for welcoming new walkers, providing information about the routes, giving encouragement and making sure everyone is walking at a pace suitable to them.
Two leaders are needed for each walk.
Richmond Council’s Health Improvement Team will provide support and training to anyone wishing to volunteer.
This will include a training course providing information on the benefits of walking, how to lead a walk and details of the Council’s health and fitness schemes.
They will also provide regular feedback and cover any expenses.
Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Services, Health and Housing, Cllr Denise Carr, said:
“The volunteers are essential to the walks.
“Last year 28 walk leaders were the winners of the Richmond and Twickenham PCT Health Improvement Award at the Community Awards.
“If you enjoy walking and meeting new people then you will be an ideal leader, I urge anyone interested to contact our Health Improvement Team.”
The health walks are part of the Council’s “Active Living Scheme” which provides a range of activities in the borough to promote the benefits of regular exercise.
