Students face solar car challenge

Fourteen-year-old students will compete in a solar car race as part of a sustainability day at Christ’s School in Richmond today, Friday, 13 June.

The day aims to help students learn more about environmental issues through a series of interactive workshops and fun activities.

Students will look at the link between energy use and climate change, environmental stories in the media and how much waste is produced and what happens to it.

They will also learn about the power of the sun to produce an alternative source of energy by building a model solar car. The grand finale for the day will give students the chance to get competitive and test out their cars on the race track.

The event has been organised by Richmond Environment Network, with support from Richmond Council and Waitrose.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said:

“Sustainability is a key priority for Richmond Council and we are doing all we can to raise awareness of it in borough schools.

“Model solar car racing is an exciting way to engage young people in learning about environmentally-friendly energy sources.

“I hope the event inspires students to become more environmentally-friendly at school, home and in the community.”
