Snow forecast for playground opening!

TV presenters, father and son Peter and Dan Snow, will be the special guests when a local primary school unveils its new playground on Monday, June 16.

The £150,000 scheme, of which £90,000 was raised by the school and the remaining £60,000 paid by Richmond Council, is at Barnes Primary in Cross Street.

Dan is a former pupil at the school, and the official opening is at 10.30am on Monday.

The design of the playground was a collaboration between the school, Richmond council, and a firm of specialist landscape architects.

It features an enclosed raised area directly accessed from the classrooms for the infants, with a small amphitheatre for use as an outside classroom.

A sloping path leads to the play area, which has rubber safety surfacing, and a sandpit. At the lower level a grassed mounded area incorporates a log “castle ring” and a weather vane pole.

The school’s head teacher, Mark Hartley, said:

“We feel that the design has transformed the outdoor learning environment and enhanced the creative play opportunities for our youngest pupils.”

Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Children’s Services, Cllr Malcolm Eady, said:

“This is a superb new playground: safe, stimulating and highly creative in design.

“I am delighted that the Council has played its part in making the project a reality and also applaud the school for its tremendous efforts. Congratulations to everyone involved with this project.”
