Mayor eyes Shades Day

The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Helen Lee-Parsons, joins thousands of people up and down the country this Friday, June 20, who will put on their shades to highlight the importance of wearing sunglasses or other eye protection in the sun.

The event is Shades Day, the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association’s famous annual fundraising and awareness event. The charity is leading the drive to make people aware of the need to put on shades, sun visors or sun hats in the sun.

Cllr Lee-Parsons said:

“Shades Day is a fantastic way to both raise money for the Guide Dogs and highlight the importance of wearing your sunglasses.

“I am delighted to support the event.”

Guide dog owner, and Guide Dogs’ Director of External Affairs, Tom Pey, said:

“Educating people in how to protect their sight is important, and one simple way to keep eyes healthy is to wear your sunglasses.

“If you are outside and the light is so bright that you have to squint or turn your head away, then you know you have to put on your shades.”
