Following an interview process involving representatives of Kunskapsskolan, the Sponsor, and the Council, the Co-Sponsor, Richmond Council has announced that Dr Sue Demont, the current Principal of Hampton Community College (HCC), has been appointed as Principal-Designate of the proposed Academy at Hampton.

The appointment is subject to full statutory consultation, in September and October of this year, on the proposed closure of the existing school on 31 August 2010 and its re-opening as an Academy on 1 September 2010, and the decision-making process that will follow in November.

Nick Whitfield, Director of Children’s Services and Culture at Richmond Council, said:

“I am delighted that Dr Demont will be able to continue the excellent work that she has undertaken during her four years as Principal.

“The academy is not a done deal, however this appointment gives the school and parents absolute clarity over leadership whether the school becomes an academy or not.

“I believe that Dr Demont is the right person to lead the proposed implementation of Kunskapsskolan’s exciting personalised model of education at HCC.

“Dr Demont and her colleagues at HCC have been working hard with Kunskapsskolan to produce a plan for transition to the proposed Academy in 2010. Details of that plan and how the curriculum will be delivered will be published in a brochure for parents in September.

“If the proposed Academy gets the approval of local people, Dr Demont’s detailed knowledge of how the school operates at present would be combined with Kunskapsskolan’s innovation to make the school outstanding and the natural first preference for parents in the Hamptons.”

Steve Bolingbroke, Managing Director of Kunskapsskolan UK, said:

“Sue and her team have laid the foundations for successful personalised learning at HCC. Sue is a strong leader who cares deeply about her students and staff. Her belief in the potential of the young people in Hampton matches our commitment to the highest aspirations for all.

“We were delighted that following her visit to our schools in Sweden, Sue decided to apply for the position of Principal at the Academy. In appointing her, we have gained a valuable colleague who will help deliver our commitment to work with the existing staff to build a new model of personalised learning for English schools.”

Dr Sue Demont said:

“I am delighted to be confirmed as Principal-Designate should the Academy go ahead.

“I am very excited by the possibilities afforded by the Kunskapsskolan model, and look forward to adopting and adapting the good practice I saw in Sweden to match the educational needs of the young people of Hampton. I am also very pleased to be able to confirm to the parents of year 5 and 6 children that the stability provided by the current leadership of HCC will continue.

“The staff and governors of HCC have worked tirelessly over the last five years to improve and promote our school, and it will be great to have a world class learning environment and some much needed additional resources to support our children’s education into the next decade.”
