Pupils' sporting flair saluted

Flair in sport will be saluted at a ceremony being held by Richmond Council next week.

More than 100 local pupils will be recognised at the borough’s first Celebration of Sporting Achievement event, on Wednesday 9 July at Twickenham Stadium.

The young people, representing 51 local schools, have been selected by their teachers because of their sporting prowess.

The event is being held to mark the end of the 2007/08 Competitive Edge Talented Athlete programme, run by Richmond Council.

The programme identifies, supports and nurtures students who show flair in sport.

Students will be presented with certificates, a commemorative badge and regional winners will be awarded medals.

Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:

“Congratulations to all the students. The recognition is well deserved because they have put a great deal of enthusiasm and energy into schools sport over the past year.

“I am delighted that the Competitive Edge programme is continuing to inspire so many young people to develop their talents in their chosen sport and to keep healthy.”

The award ceremony will run from 4pm to 5.45pm.
