Richmond upon Thames councillors have joined together to purchase an important piece of artwork by renowned artist with Asperger syndrome, David Downes.
The work, ‘Aerial view of Kew Gardens’, will become an invaluable piece in the borough’s art collection.
It is one of a series of local views that David drew from memory, which were especially commissioned and exhibited at the Council-run Riverside Gallery.
David, a graduate of the Royal College of Art, was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in 2002, after the series was created.
The artwork will be displayed at York House and cared for by Orleans House Gallery, whick looks after the borough’s art collection of more than 2,400 works.
Richmond Council’s Leader, Serge Lourie, said:
“I am delighted that David’s excellent artwork, which provides a unique aerial perspective of the glasshouse at Kew Gardens, has become part of our prestigious art collection. This work will enhance the diversity of the collection, which covers three centuries of local views.
“Thank you to all councillors for their great generosity and commitment in securing this artwork.”
