The achievements of young athletes who represented the borough at this year’s London Youth Games were celebrated at The Stoop last week.
Harlequins players Ugo Monye and Tom Guest presented awards to young people and support staff who helped the borough finish 12th overall, which is their best result in five years.
Richmond’s team was one of 33 London borough’s to compete and they secured 20 top ten placings.
The six-month campaign started in February with the cricket and came to a close at the finals weekend which was held at Crystal Palace earlier this month.
Richmond’s secondary school students’ team won a host of medals, including gold for the girls’ tag rugby and canoe sprints, silver for the disability girls’ football team and bronze for the boys’ cricket and girls’ hockey. The primary school students’ team was also very successful, winning gold for tag rugby, silver for hockey and bronze for netball.
There were also a number of individual medal winners in karate, judo, indoor rowing, cycling and swimming.
The Mayor of Richmond upon Thames, Cllr Helen Lee-Parsons, accepted a cheque for £4,000 from Harlequins on behalf of the Council to help the borough in the lead up to next year’s Youth Games.
The event was organised by Richmond Council’s Sports Development Team.

“Congratulations to everyone who contributed to such a successful result at this year’s Youth Games.
“The teams performed superbly, with support from a number of committed managers, volunteers and clubs.
“Through initiatives such as the Council’s Competitive Edge and the generous contribution from Harlequins, I am sure the borough will continue to shine at future Games.
The Youth Games feature 27 sports and 47 scoring events, with more than 20,000 participants from London boroughs.
