Children set Olympic reading challenge

The national children’s summer reading challenge was launched in the borough on Wednesday, 9 July, at Heathfield Library.

The challenge aims to get more children reading during their summer holidays.

This year’s theme is 'Team Read' and is based on the medal system of the Olympics in anticipation of the Beijing Games later this summer.

Children aged four to 11 can take part. They are awarded stickers for each book read and a gold medal and certificate if they complete the six book target.

There will be a number of events, supported by Richmond Council, taking place in local libraries as part of the challenge over the next two months.

Year Three pupils from Heathfield Juniors School were at the launch event to meet author Tom Palmer, an avid football fan who encourages children to enjoy reading and writing through football-based reading activities.

Cllr Liz Jaeger, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure on Richmond Council, said:

“The challenge is great way to keep children reading throughout the summer holidays.

“We want as many children involved as possible, as it gives them a goal and a real sense of achievement when they return to school with their certificates.”
