Be considerate over noise - plea

As the summer party season swings into action, Richmond Council has issued a timely reminder – to be considerate over noise.

Last year the Council received a total of 1,201 complaints concerning noise nuisance at both domestic and commercial premises.

Of those, nearly 500 came during the summer months.

Main sources of complaints concerning domestic noise related to noisy parties, loud music and din from DIY.

Complaints about commercial premises and construction sites were mostly sparked by noisy machinery and equipment and amplified music from pubs and clubs.

But summer noise can cause a particular headache, with windows open during the day and throughout hot nights.

People also spend more time in their gardens and entertaining outside.

Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Martin Elengorn said:

“This is the time for parties and we want everyone to enjoy themselves over the summer period in our beautiful borough.

“However, it’s a fact that noise complaints do increase over the summer and it’s timely to remind people to be considerate and not let excessive noise spoil things.

“We are not being killjoys, but urging residents and owners of commercial premises to always consider their neighbours and not be the cause of noise misery.

“I would urge people to contact us if they have a problem. Please don’t suffer in silence.”

The Council operates a weekend noise service on Friday and Saturday nights between 10pm and 3am. The service can be contacted on 07944 038 495.

Complaints about residential noise can be made during office hours on 020 8891 7737 while complaints about commercial noise can be made by calling 020 8891 7994.
