Appeal for carers to offer disabled children short breaks

An urgent call for carers to provide short breaks for disabled children has been issued by Richmond Council’s Family Link.

Family Link needs people to look after young people for either regular day visits or overnight stays in the carer’s home, usually at the weekend.

People from all backgrounds are welcome, particularly those who have experience of disability in their personal life or through work. All carers will be assessed and approved by the Council before they are matched with a child.

They will receive training, support from the borough’s Short Break Care Team and an allowance to cover costs.

Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Education on Richmond Council, said:

“Short break carers play an invaluable role in the community, helping to give disabled children and their parents much needed time-out.

“They help youngsters develop skills and make friends and also help the rest of their family to cope with the demands of caring for a disabled child.

If you think you can help support young people and their families in the local area, please get in touch with us.”

Carole, mother of Elliot, aged 11, who visits carers for one overnight stay per month, said:

“The visits mean so much to Elliot. He thrives on the one-to-one attention and the opportunity to have fun doing things other children might take for granted.”

Cathy and Ali, carers of Elliot for five years, said:

“Being Family Link carers can be a challenging but also stimulating and highly rewarding experience that provides invaluable respite to many families and a lifeline to children like Elliot.”
