New exhibition to showcase 'magpie' artist

A retrospective of Richmond-based artist Hugh Lee, who turns discarded items and found objects into vibrant works of art, will go on show at Orleans House Gallery next month.

Lee only began painting on his retirement and has branched out into shaping imaginative pieces composed of glue, scrap and everyday objects. With echoes of Dadaism and the surrealists he turns detritus into unique compositions.

His engaging and highly sustainable works will be on display in Hugh Lee: A Retrospective from 2 February until 30 March at the Twickenham gallery.

Cllr Serge Lourie, Leader of Richmond Council, said:

”I am delighted that we will be showcasing both a local artist and one who adopts such a sustainable approach to his craft, incorporating cast offs and natural objects in his work.

“It’s extraordinary that the artist only picked up a paintbrush upon his retirement.

“It is sure to be a fascinating exhibition and I urge people to attend and also see the ongoing transformation of the stables block at the rear of Orleans House.”

A catalogue and postcards of Hugh Lee’s work will be available at the gallery.
