Richmond Council has pledged to put pressure on the utilities to ensure that their further mains replacement works in Richmond town centre are completed as quickly as possible and with minimum disruption.
National Grid announced last week that additional works in George Street needed to be brought forward.
The additional work to replace gas mains is now due to start on Monday January 21.
National Grid propose to do the job in three stages, beginning at the House of Fraser end of George Street. The work could last up to two months.
It means that work on parts of the Council’s town centre improvement scheme, which began in late 2007, will be delayed.
Richmond Council’s Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, Cllr David Trigg, said:
“National Grid’s late decision to extend their works to George Street will delay the Council’s own improvement scheme. This is highly regrettable.
“We are putting maximum pressure on them to ensure that this work is carried out quickly and with minimum disruption to the public and local traders. These are our paramount concerns.
“Our improvement scheme will transform the town centre and we’ll keep up the pressure on National Grid, from day one, to complete their mains replacement work as speedily as possible.”
