£1m makeover of heritage gardens ahead of schedule

Terrace Gardens

The major restoration of Terrace and Buccleuch Gardens in Richmond will be completed ahead of schedule, Richmond Council has announced.

Initially planned as a two year project to finish in spring 2009, the £1m renovation of the prestigious site is being accelerated with all paths to be restored and resurfaced this year.

The revised plans mean the park will now remain open during the works. It was initially scheduled to close for up to four months. The move will also ensure the project, part of the Council’s Parks Improvement Programme, remains on budget.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Cabinet Member for Environment on Richmond Council, said:

”The gardens are one of the borough’s most important green sites and we are working very closely with an advisory group to ensure that the result is what is desired and the project is treated with the sensitivity that it deserves.

“It is therefore particularly pleasing that the parks department has identified the opportunity to condense the works programme

“It will reduce disruption to park users, ensure a higher quality of work and mean the gardens are returned to their former glory earlier than planned.

“Resident satisfaction with our parks and open spaces is the highest in the country and sustained investment and close public consultation such as this underlines our commitment to this key service.”
