Scenarios help children deal with emergencies

Richmond upon Thames Councillor with children at a simulated bicycle accident

Various scenarios are being played out in the borough this week, all aimed at helping children deal with emergency situations.

The Junior Citizen Scheme is being organised by Richmond Council’s safety education team and is being held all this week and next at Holly Lodge, Richmond Park.

Small groups of Year 6 pupils from every junior school in the borough, and from a number of independent schools, are tackling various scenarios, such as a mock car crash, fire, and a mugging.

At each one they have to make decisions which could, in real life, affect their own safety or the safety of others.

As well as the Council, organisations helping to stage the scenarios include the police, the fire brigade, the ambulance service, the Port of London Authority and the Royal Parks.

Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, Cllr David Trigg, said this week:

“This excellent scheme has proved highly popular among local schools.

“It gives young people really hands-on experience which could prove a lifesaver for themselves and others if an emergency situation should arise.”

For more information about the scheme please call the safety education team on 0208 487 5133.
