Recruitment drive seeks carers to offer short breaks for autistic children

Holding hands

An appeal for carers to provide short breaks for children with autism and their families has been issued by Richmond Council.

It is seeking people to look after youngsters on the autistic spectrum for either day visits or overnight stays, usually at the weekend. These short breaks help children with autism develop skills and make friends and also help the rest of their family to cope with the demands of caring for an autistic child.

A recent survey by national charity, Shared Care Network, revealed a desperate shortage of short break carers across the UK.

People from all backgrounds are welcome, particularly those who have experience of autism in their personal life or through work. Energy, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are essential and all carers will be assessed and approved by the Council before they are matched with a child.

They will receive training, support from the borough’s Short Break Care Team and an allowance to cover costs.

Cllr Malcolm Eady, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Education on Richmond Council, said:

“The impact of our short break carers on the lives of young people with autism and their families can not be overstated.

“Even for just a few hours a week, it gives a child the chance to interact with and meet new people, make new friends or try different activities.

“For the family it can provide them with an opportunity to focus attention on a non-disabled child and to relax and recharge their batteries.

“Our carers consistently tell us that their time is challenging but hugely rewarding as they get to know the family well and develop their own skills.

“We urgently need more carers. If you think you can help improve the lives of young people and their families, please get in contact with us.”
