Pedal power for borough teachers

Teachers on bikes

Local teachers are being encouraged to saddle up under a Council pilot scheme encouraging journeys to work by cycle.

The Cycles for Teachers Scheme is providing 16 local schools with 65 bicycles for teachers under its drive to promote sustainable transport.

The scheme provides teachers with the cycle, helmets, clothing, panniers, lights and cycle locks.

Success in the pilot project could lead to the scheme being rolled out to more schools across the borough through the Smarter Travel initiative.

Cabinet Member for Traffic, Transport and Parking, Cllr David Trigg, said:

“This excellent scheme is proving a big hit with teachers in the pilot schools.

“It is all part of our continuing effort to promote sustainable and healthier forms of travel.

“Teachers are role models for the school community and their efforts are likely to encourage others to follow suit.”

The Council already offers cycle training to all Year 5 and 6 school children in the borough and the Safety Education Team also provides adult cycle courses in the evening for all levels of ability.
