Be bowled over at open days

Two lawn bowls and the kitty (or jack)

A month-long push to promote the sport of bowls to a wider audience will be launched across the borough in May.

Richmond Council’s Sports Development Team is working with bowls clubs to attract players, young and old, to a series of taster sessions. Free events in Hampton, Sheen, Teddington and Strawberry Hill, will allow people to sample one of the world’s most ancient pastimes with qualified club coaches.

Cllr John Coombs, Cabinet Member for Youth, Culture and Leisure, said:

”The Council is working closely with schools and clubs across the borough to boost the number of residents playing sport of all kinds.

“Our borough has a rich sporting heritage and is the most active in England. There is something suitable for everyone, regardless of age, fitness or ability.

“Bowls is one of those sports that can be played and enjoyed by all. It’s an excellent way to socialise, get some fresh air and gentle exercise, and the open days are a great way to give it a try.”

Equipment is provided but players must wear flat shoes.

The locations and times of the open days are:

Hampton Bowls Club, Carlisle Park

Sunday, 11, 18 and 25 May and Sunday 1 June, from 10am.
