A minor re-shuffle of Richmond Council’s Cabinet has seen former Mayor Cllr David Marlow take up the position of Cabinet Member for Community Development.
Cllr Sam Salvoni, the former post-holder, has stepped down for family reasons, but will become a member of the Finance Overview and Scrutiny Committee.
Cllr Marlow, a life-long Richmond upon Thames resident, said: “We have committed to putting the community right at the heart of everything this Council does. My role is to ensure that happens. The Council has made great strides during the past 12 months to listen and ask local people first before making decisions; we must continue in this vein if we’re to have the confidence of our residents.
“My intention is to continue that ethos throughout the services the authority provides. There is a very active voluntary sector in Richmond upon Thames which we support. The Council’s Community Resource Bank, and the Mayor’s volunteer recruitment drive are good examples of what can be done when people work together. I want to make sure these groups and projects are given the backing they need to thrive. We want to see a borough where people work together and with the Council for the good of the community, as well as for their own individual success.”
Cllr Marlow will work closely with Cllr Fleming to deliver the promised Village Plans in 2012, which will set out how each area could improve, and opportunities for local people to play a part in helping each other. He will be involved in the longer term in making sure those plans’ commitments are met. He will also be involved in encouraging volunteering and supporting the sector through advising on the Council’s processes and promoting opportunities and supporting the Council’s wider programme of community engagement.
Lord True, Leader of the Council, said: “David brings many years of experience back into the Cabinet. More importantly, he possesses a real drive to understand local people’s concerns and wants. He is a local person, born and bred, and he and his wife Jane are absolutely devoted to this borough. He will sustain our commitment to listen and work with people in developing policies for the future. We are making a sea change in how this Council works to put an end to the top-down mentality that has marked local government in Britain for too long. I thank Sam Salvoni for the enthusiasm she brought to that vision. David will now I am sure take up the baton with verve.”
During his 20 years as a councillor, Cllr Marlow has served as a former chairman of the education committee and a former cabinet member for the Environment. He was Mayor from 2010-2011. He represented Hampton Wick between 1974-1986 and has been a ward member for South Twickenham since 2002.
Outside the Council, he supports the Relate charity, the Richmond Theatre Trust and the Reserve Forces Cadets Association for London.
